Data Data Everywhere: Sensors, Streams, and Mobility

Call number: 35946 , Credit: 1

Fall 2004

First meeting: Wednesday September 8th, 5-6pm at 2124 Siebel Center

Regular meetings (starting 9/14): Tuesdays, 4-5pm (tentative), 2124 Siebel Center

About the Course

Data has become ubiquitous-- As we move toward a digital world, data is now everywhere! It is being generated and captured in more and more previously unexpected settings. Consequently, a major challenge for data management today is to handle data generated from non-traditional sources, with non-traditional dynamism. These new settings challenge the notion of the dominating relational database system: Where do we get data? How do we store data? What are interesting queries? How do we process such queries? Many researchers in the field are engaging in these challenges.

Centering around this theme of ubiquitous data management, this seminar will broadly sample current research results, by reading  latest research literature in premier conferences (e.g., SIGMOD, VLDB, WWW, KDD). We will sample various topics in breadth, reflecting what the research community has been pursuing and what the future directions are. In particular, our study will cover three main areas-- Sensor network, stream databases, and mobile data.

The reading list, consisting of recent research papers, will be selected and finalized before the first class meeting.

Prerequisites

Instructor:

Format

This course will draw material from the literature in the relevant journals and conferences. Students will read and present the selected papers, usually one per week.

Presentation:

Each student will present one paper (depending on the enrollment) during the semester.

Class Participation:

Students will participate in class discussions during and after each presentation. Attendance is required. You will "pass" the class if you do not miss more than 3 times.

Evaluation:

The grade will be based on the paper presentations, class attendance, and participation in discussions.

Schedule

The schedule of the reading list will be finalized before the class starts.
